Justine Hill

Justine Hill was born in Tarrytown, NY in 1985. She is based in Brooklyn, NY. Hill received her MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA and her BA from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA.

Since 2015 Justine Hill has been focusing on non-rectangular paintings she refers to as “Cut Outs.” These paintings are first cut out of plywood and then wrapped in canvas. Often her larger pieces are compiled of more than one shaped panel hung together on the wall. The Cut Outs were conceived to emphasize the boundary of her paintings.

Hill uses both graphic strokes and smaller repetitive marks that together register as pattern to compose the paintings. She often chooses to include marks that reference digital design programs, which she utilizes frequently in her process. However, all the paintings are made by hand using a combination of acrylic paint, pastel, pencil and crayon.

Hill’s work has been shown widely in the USA. Her most recent exhibitions include Freestanding at Denny Gallery in New York City (2018), Movers and Shapers with Ali Silverstein at Victori + Mo in Brooklyn, NY (2018) and a two-person at David B. Smith Gallery in Denver, CO (2018). Hills work has been reviewed or featured in Art in America, Hyperallergic, New York Magazine, The Observer, The Huffington Post, The Art Newspaper, and Artsy, among others.
