Javier Calleja

Javier Calleja is a Spanish artist born in 1971 in Malaga. He studied fine arts at the University of Granada, and then moved to Malaga, city in which he currently lives and works.

Javier Calleja’s drawings are distinctively figurative and naive. For his work, Calleja is inspired by childhood, with an impression of innocence in his compositions. Calleja’s bright-eyed cartoon characters that draw influences from Pop, Surrealism, and Minimalism. Often, he subjects boast hard-hearted phrases across their two-dimensional bodies such as “Don’t Take It All To Heart” and “Fuck You All” that reflect the his everyday reality.

His work has been the object of fifteen solo exhibitions, as well as of numerous group exhibitions, in Spain as well as in France, the United States, Germany, Switzerland and Lebanon. His drawings have been awarded three times, for example in 2014, when the artist received the first DKV award for best Spanish artist at the Barcelona Contemporary Art Fair.
